Bridge Music Jazz Presents Affleck Parnell Quartet

Fri 17 May 2019

8pm A rare treat in store for Glasgow - a taste of New Orleans - Bringing old school Jazz and blues back to the attention of our modern ears. Four time award winner/ finalist of ‘Best Jazz Vocalist’ (Scottish Jazz Awards) Ali Affleck is delighted to be collaborating with fellow dual USA/ UK citizen pianist Joplin Parnell and this is their first tour. Augmenting the duo will be the outstanding Colin Steele on trumpet and Roy Percy on double bass. Ali has earned her solid reputation as the quintessential ‘go to’ vocalist for authentic trad Jazz / prohibition era blues and as she is also a swing dancer, Ali is uniquely placed to deliver this music. “No other singer can deliver this material with such authenticity ” (BBC Scotland) “A masterclass in real grassroots jazz' ***** (Edinburgh49.org) "The Real Deal" (Clive Anderson BBC Fringe 2016) “Music from another Place and Time but puts a smile on the faces of the Here and Now”  (Jim Gilchrist, The Scotsman) JOPLIN PARNELL is a prominent pianist and vocalist on London’s Jazz and Blues scene. He has lived a life immersed in music having started out at an early age following his piano playing father around New Orleans parades, jam sessions and bars, snare drum in hand. His sets weave a rich tapestry of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues and Brazilian Choro, New York Stride and French Musette drawing influence from the full breadth of his musical heritage and imparting a deep soulful sensibility onto everything he does. Tonights performance will be a celebration of New Orleans with a very varied setlist including well loved standards and a few surprises - some very rare old songs including one that has most likely not been heard live since 1930! Ali and Joplin both lived in New Orleans and they both approach this music in a light way, and as such they are not completely restrained by the ‘old trad’ sensibilities- in sum, this is a fresh passionate interpretation of New Orleans and exactly the vibe of music that you will hear played on Frenchmen street today! https://aliaffleck.com/press-kit https://www.joplinparnell.co.uk/ Doors 7pm on stage 8pm Booking Reserved Seating Should you wish to guarantee seating, you can book and pay online, £7 per person.
